Gustave Fayet Gustave Fayet, Collector - Designer

A key figure of turn-of-the-century modernity demonstrating how collecting, creating, and artistic commitment can be deeply intertwined.

The exhibition spans the entire Fondation and is divided into two parts, exploring Fayet’s dual identity as a collector and an artist-designer, and highlighting the deep interconnection between his collecting habits, creative output, and artistic dedication. It is unprecedented in size, featuring over 250 works from Fayet's extensive collection, which have been dispersed globally, alongside 374 of his own artistic creations, many of which are previously unexhibited and were specially restored for this event.

This exhibition is the culmination of several years of research, made possible through collaboration with 64 international institutions and 71 private collections. Van Gogh - Gustave Fayet The showcase celebrates Fayet’s influence as a passionate collector and innovative designer who made significant contributions to the early 20th century decorative arts.

Fayet, who collected works by prominent artists like Van Gogh and Picasso, was a champion of avant-garde movements. His home in Paris even functioned as an informal gallery for his vast collection, which included nearly 200 works by Gauguin and served as a gathering place for artists and collectors. He was also instrumental in commissioning a major decorative project from his friend Odilon Redon, further pushing forward the aesthetics of his time.

Fayet’s multifaceted work incorporated various mediums, including painting, ceramics, interior design, and textile design, showcasing Gustave Fayet his artistic versatility and influence on figures such as Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin. The exhibition aims to illuminate Fayet's rich contributions, merging fine and decorative arts, and revealing a nuanced understanding of early 20th century modernity through a selection of 728 works presented across three floors of the Fondation.

Highlighted pieces in the exhibition include 10 paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, 78 works by Paul Gauguin, and 86 works by Odilon Redon, collectively offering a fresh perspective on Fayet's legacy and the artistic milieu of his era. This marks the first major international exhibition dedicated solely to his remarkable career and collections, carving a new chapter in the narrative of modern and decorative arts.

This exhibition builds upon previous showcases of major art collectors like Sergei Shchukin and Samuel Courtauld, delving into the life of Gustave Fayet, a pivotal yet underappreciated figure in modern art history.
